Meet Paul Buchana

Paul’s research interests include but are not limited to; renewable energy technologies, pattern recognition, signal processing, time series analysis, forecasting, model estimation, building and evaluation as applied to different problems in different paradigms. In line with his research, he has co-authored and published scientific papers in the energy, pattern recognition, image processing and data science fields and some of his work has been presented at IEEE’s International Renewable Energy Congress and IEEE’s International Conference on Image Processing. He has also conducted data-driven research in the area of risk assessment particularly for offshore wind farms in the North Sea (a portfolio of over 38 offshore wind farms) and this work is pending publication in the Royal Society Open Science Journal.

Paul holds a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering (First Class Hons.) from Makerere University in Uganda and a Master’s degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University, specializing in Data Science and Machine Learning.

Meet Davy Uwizera

Davy is a data scientist and software engineer with expertise in building big data analytics and machine learning based systems. He has led and has been a part of different projects working with financial, telecommunication and health institutions. His research interests include but are not limited to; signal processing, pattern recognition, forensics, macroeconomics and microeconomics. He has done research specifically in the areas of optical character recognition, image de-nosing using deep neural networks, assessment of the credibility of one currency in the East African Community in terms of consumer price inflation and he has published a paper on Monitoring and Forecasting Crop Production using Satellite Imagery in Rwanda in IEEE international conference on Technological Innovations in ICT for Agriculture and Rural Development (IEEE TIAR). He is fluent in various development tools and languages including but not limited to; R programming, Python, Java, JavaScript, NodeJS, ExpressJS, MySQL, NoSQL, C, C++, PHP, Spark, WRF, Tableau, CUDA, H2o, MATLAB, SPSS and E-views.

Davy won multiple graduate awards, the overall best graduating postgraduate student in the college of business and economics at the University of Rwanda and the student excellence award at Carnegie Mellon University.

He holds a masters degrees in IT from Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), MSc economics from University of Rwanda (UR) and has completed a masters program in statistics at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and technology (JKUAT). His Bachelor degree is in applied mathematics and statistics from Kampala International University.

Meet Philip Sendi

Philip is an engineer and Data Scientist. He consults with BBOXX Ltd. a Smart Solar company with over 60K off-grid clients in rural Kenya and Rwanda. In this work, he is tasked with delivery of after sales analytics solutions in form of Real-time dashboards to enhance decision making. Philip is passionate about quantitative analysis, financial modeling, data visualization, machine learning, image processing and renewable energy. He has experience using a wide range of data analysis tools and languages that include; Power Bi, R, Matlab and SPSS. He is also currently working with an in-house team to build a Data Warehouse to make the processing of Big Data possible.

Philip graduated with a Master of Science in Information Technology from Carnegie Mellon University and a Bachelor of Science in Information Technology from Sikkim Manipal University

Meet Paul Nsonga

Paul’s research interests include wireless Ad Hoc networks, privacy, Electric Vehicles, power system communications and smart grids. He has published and presented scientific papers at the IEEE International Conference on Emerging Technologies and Innovative Business Practices for the Transformation of Societies (IEEE EmergiTech) and IEEE Online Conference on Green Communications (OnlineGreenComm). His other research works have been submitted to the IEEE Transactions on Industrial Informatics journal and the International Conference on Smart Cities and Green ICT Systems (SMARTGREENS) for review. His other interests include but are not limited to Cyber security, Renewable energy project analysis and development, Enterprise architectures and policy development.

Paul received his Bachelor of Science degree in Information Technology from Sikkim Manipal University in 2012 and a Master of Science in Information Technology degree from Carnegie Mellon University.

Meet Alex Ntale

is the Executive Director of the ICT Chamber Secretariat of the Rwanda Private Sector Federation and founding President of the Rwanda Angel Investor Club and an early stage investor in technology startups. He is also a founding board member of Africa Smart Investments a consortium of 15 ICT businesses in Rwanda. His work experience ranges from working as a computer engineer to financial services’ broker in London’s financial district. He is a passionate enthusiast of technology and financial markets developments and their role in solving global challenges.

Alex holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Computer Science from Makerere University, a Master of Science Degree in Investment and Quantitative Finance from the University of Westminster in England and a Postgraduate Diploma in Strategic Business Information Technology from National Computing Centre (NCC Education) in England.

Meet Dr. Patrick E. McSharry

Dr Patrick McSharry is a Visiting Professor at Carnegie Mellon University, a Senior Research Fellow at Oxford University, a Fellow of the Royal Statistical Society and a Senior Member of the IEEE. He takes a multidisciplinary approach to developing quantitative techniques for data science, decision making and risk management. His research focuses on big data, forecasting, predictive analytics, analysis of human behavior and machine learning. He has published over 90 peer reviewed papers, participated in knowledge exchange programs and consults for national and international government agencies and the insurance, finance, energy, telecoms, environment and healthcare sectors.

Patrick holds a BSc in Theoretical Physics from University of Dublin’s Trinity College, a MSc in Engineering from University of Dublin’s Trinity College and a PhD in Mathematics from Oxford University.
